Peisey-Nancroix, France
The Via Ferrata des Bettières sits at the end of the Rosuel road in Peisey-Nancroix (Savoie), where you're surrounded by stunning Alpine peaks. The setting alone is worth the trip—you get 360-degree mountain views the whole time. This is three linked sections with increasing challenge. Section 1 (Easy): The Éperon des Croës is solid for beginners and families, with good rock and an exit option if you want to bail. Section 2 (Moderate): Kicks off with a 50-meter vertical that opens up the valley, continues over an exposed ridge, climbs another vertical, and finishes with a Nepalese bridge. Second exit option here too if you need it. Section 3 (Hard): A large overhanging yellow slab that's more athletic, then easier terrain back to the "Les Lanches - Mont Pourri" trail. Plan on 1.5 hours for the route itself, 15 minutes approach, and 1 hour descent. The route is open late May through October 31. Important: The original descent is blocked by rockfall—you have to follow the marked hiking trail down to Les Lanches. The parking area is large with facilities, and overnight bivouacking is allowed for tents and vans (take care of the place).
