Peterlewand (officially Gustav Renker Steig) is a compact but punchy via ferrata on a rock wall east of Ossiacher See lake near Steindorf in Carinthia, Austria. What makes it special is the combination of a short, serious climb with stunning panoramic views of the lake below and the surrounding Nockberge mountains. The route is brief and accessible (just 10 minutes walk from parking), making it popular for climbers wanting a quick Alpine experience. The rock wall rises 8 to 35 meters with some dramatically overhanging sections, and you'll feel genuinely exposed for a short climb. Multiple routes at various grades and a children's practice via ferrata make it a multi-level climbing destination. 310 meters of climbing over 30 minutes total (10-minute approach, 15-minute descent), with 70 meters elevation gain. Grade D with a brutally hard D/E overhanging section that demands serious arm strength and technique. This isn't a straightforward climb, and the overhang catches many people off guard by its difficulty despite the route's short length. Bring full via ferrata kit and helmet. The real gotcha: because it's so accessible (tiny parking area, 10-minute walk), the wall gets very crowded on weekends and sunny days, so go early or midweek for a quality experience.
