Holzgau, Austria
The Erlebnisklettersteig Simmswasserfall is a polished via ferrata experience in the Lechtal near Holzgau, Tyrol, where you climb alongside the dramatically powerful Simms waterfall and the roaring Höhenbach creek. What makes this special is the combination of three rope bridges, multiple difficulty variants (so you can choose your level), and the constant sound and spray of falling water throughout the route. You stay low in elevation at around 1,200 meters but feel immersed in a dramatic canyon setting. The Bärenhöhle (bear cave) serves as the route hub, offering a rock shelter for gear storage and a short practice via ferrata (grade B) if you want to warm up or let others go first. The hanging bridge nearby (200m long) is worth checking out if you have energy left.
250 meters of climbing over 45 minutes total (30 min approach, 30 min descent), with three sections offering a mix of B to C difficulty, though the easiest option still has some B/C passages, so pure beginners should expect challenge. The route is family-friendly for kids with climbing experience and features multiple rope bridges to cross. Bring full via ferrata kit and helmet. Critical seasonal note: this route is closed October 11 through May 15 due to avalanche danger in the approach gully, so visit between late May and October. The one gotcha many miss: the steep initial approach to the route entrance has good exposure, so take it seriously despite short duration.
