Sexten - Sesto, Italy
Croda Rossa (the Red Peak) in the Sesto Dolomites near the Valle di Casies is one of the most popular via ferratas in the Dolomites, following World War I military paths and cable systems up to 2,936 meters. What makes it distinctive is the sheer length combined with accessibility: a cable car whisks you up to 1,914 meters, then you hike to the route start and climb a dramatic 40-meter iron ladder right at the beginning. The route rewards effort with sweeping views across the Dolomite peaks and means you reach a nearly 3,000-meter summit without needing high-altitude mountaineering skills. The landscape is exceptional, with red rock towers and the remnants of WWI fortifications threading through the ascent. 6 hours total (1 hour 15 min to the route start, 2.5 hours climbing, 2 hours 15 min descent), with 1,020 meters vertical gain beyond the cable car. Medium difficulty throughout: 80 percent is straightforward climbing and exposed paths, 20 percent is steel cable or ladder sections, all well-secured. Sure-footedness and alpine experience are genuinely required, especially on the descent. Expect crowds in midsummer and absolutely avoid the northern flank in early summer when hard snow lingers. Critical seasonal caution: the high altitude brings winter conditions even in summer after storms or weather changes in autumn, so monitor the forecast closely and start early. The route is long enough that an underestimated weather window can leave you exposed high on the mountain.
