Via Ferrata dei Rio Secco is a straightforward canyon climb up a dramatic dry creek bed in Trentino's Dolomites near the town of Cadino, just north of Verona. What makes it special is the intimate gorge setting where you climb inside a narrow vertical valley with the canyon walls rising on both sides, offering beautiful views framed by the rocky canyon and gorgeous forest surroundings. The route is well-designed and recently upgraded with new protection, making it a popular choice for families and moderate climbers seeking an engaging day without extreme exposure. The alternating climbing and rest sections keep the experience relaxed and friendly, perfect for building confidence on via ferrata. 450 meters of climbing over 2 hours total (15-minute forest walk to the start, 45-minute descent to parking), with 260 meters elevation gain. Grade C difficulty, but considered easy-to-moderate since the route has been substantially simplified with recent cramps and protection upgrades. The ascent alternates between C-level climbing pitches and walking sections, then descends via ladders and secured paths rated maximum B difficulty that return directly to the parking area. Full via ferrata kit, helmet, and harness are required. Best June through October when water flow in the creek is minimal. One practical note: wear sturdy shoes with good grip as you'll be walking on and around streambed rocks, which can be slippery even when the creek appears dry.
