Tegelbergsteig is a popular mid-level via ferrata on Tegelberg (1,265 m) above Schwangau near Füssen in Bavaria's Ammergauer Alpen, offering unforgettable views of Neuschwanstein Castle framed by rock walls and alpine terrain. What makes it distinctive is the combination of dramatic exposure, numerous fixed ladders, and the fairy-tale setting with the famous castle visible below. The route climbs the east and north faces with sections of real exposure and sustained C-grade difficulty, making it rewarding without being extreme. Heavy use over decades has compressed the rock, actually increasing difficulty, so many who climb it report it feels harder than the official C grade suggests. 810 meters of climbing over 2 hours (1 hour approach from the cable car valley station via Gelbe Wand trail, 1 hour 30 minutes descent), with 350 meters elevation gain. Starts with a distinctive 15-meter entrance ladder followed immediately by steep sections rated B/C and multiple C passages. Medium-hard via ferrata requiring solid footwork and climbing confidence. Critical seasonal restriction: closed November through end of May every year for nature conservation, so plan visits for June through October. If you find the route too hard on the entrance ladder or first traverses, the easy Gelbe Wand trail (A) offers an immediate bail-out option and alternative descent. One caution: enormous popularity means heavy traffic, so expect crowds and loose protection from wear, especially on weekends. You can use the cable car (Tegelbergbahn) for descent if energy is depleted.
