Bärenlochsteig is a relatively obscure via ferrata on Heukuppe (2007 m) in the Rax-Schneeberg range near Gloggnitz, Austria. What makes it worth the effort is the dramatic landscape of solitude: you're traversing one of the loneliest stretches of the Raxalpe, with stunning views toward Schneealpe, through genuine alpine scenery that feels far more remote than the Vienna region usually offers. The route mixes hiking with climbing, features a series of rock pitches, and has a memorable chimney section. You'll emerge onto an open plateau where you can see the distinct Bärenloch rock formation and have multiple descent options. It's genuinely solitary terrain that rewards early starters. Plan for a full 5.5-hour day from Hinternasswald (712 m starting elevation). The route gains 1300 m total, with about 250 m of actual climbing and a surprisingly long 3-hour descent. Grade B difficulty (easy to moderate), but don't underestimate the conditioning requirement or the exposed sections. You need full via ferrata kit and helmet, plus solid footwork and comfort with heights. The chimney crux is trickier than the grade suggests. Start early, bring 2-3 liters of water, and watch the weather carefully. Best May through July for solitude, though the route is passable into autumn. The Alpine Society Reißtal maintains it, but "not overly equipped" is their honest description, so inspect the gear stations carefully.
