This is a remote via ferrata on Heukuppe (2007 m) in the Rax-Schneeberg range near Gloggnitz, Austria. What makes it stand out is the sudden appearance of the Bärenloch, a dramatic rock wall that feels surprising in scale, combined with views of Schneealpe from angles you won't see elsewhere. Most of the route is hiking punctuated by short climbing pitches and a narrow chimney section, then widens into alpine walking on the plateau. It's remarkably solitary for the Vienna region, but it's active hunting territory that's fenced for wildlife protection. Respect the boundaries and keep noise low, especially in autumn. 1,300 m elevation gain over 5.5 hours total (1.5 hour approach on loose scree, 1 hour climbing, rest is plateau walking and descent). Grade B/1, easy to moderate, but the exposure is real in places and requires foot security. Bring full via ferrata set and helmet (only partial protection on route), since descent takes nearly as long as ascent and demands your full attention. The Kamin (chimney) section feels harder than the grade suggests because of confinement. Best May-July for solitude and fewer crowds; avoid after heavy rain. Two descent options: straightforward Kaisersteig if tired, or Peter-Jäckel-Steig if still confident. Key gotchas: start at dawn for a full day, carry 2-3 liters of water (sources unreliable on route), and consider the shortcut to Habsburghaus if energy runs low after the plateau, letting you rest before descent matters most.
