The Weichtalklamm is a remarkable easy gorge scramble in Austria's Rax-Schneeberg group near Reichenau an der Rax that stands out by literally taking you through and inside a river canyon. What makes it distinctive is that it's less of a traditional via ferrata and more of an adventurous gorge hike, combining scrambling with wading through and climbing alongside flowing water. The narrow canyon walls force you partly into the stream itself, using iron ladders, chains, and carved holds to navigate the confined space. It's genuinely accessible to beginners with no fear of heights and basic scrambling confidence, yet offers far more character than most easy routes. 6.5 kilometers over 3.5 to 4 hours (minimal approach, 2 hours through the gorge, 1.25 hours descent), with 690 meters elevation gain. Difficulty is grade A, and a via ferrata set is not required, making this a hiker-friendly alternative to technical ferratas. Waterproof shoes are absolutely mandatory, not optional, since sections involve wading directly in cold river water. The route features a small cave section where you wade through water inside rock, so expect to get wet on your feet and hands. Best May through October, though late spring runoff can make water levels significantly higher and the route more serious. Key gotcha: the water is relentlessly cold and the footing inside the canyon becomes slippery fast, so good water shoes and a methodical pace beat speed. Another gotcha: the cave section can feel claustrophobic, so assess your comfort with confined wet spaces before committing.
