Reichenau an der Rax, Austria
The Gaislochsteig is a straightforward yet visually striking via ferrata in Austria's Rax-Schneeberg group that stands out for the dramatic Gaisloch cave system it navigates. Located in the heart of the Höllental (Hell Valley) near Reichenau an der Rax, this moderately simple route climbs through exposed sections featuring a cave ledge, iron ladders, and chains. What makes it memorable is that it functions as a scenic connector between other ferratas in the valley rather than a destination in itself, so you'll share the route primarily with climbers doing the full Höllental ferrata round. The route delivers stunning views backward toward the valley and the Schneeberg massif, especially from the exposed traverse sections. 900 meters of climbing over roughly 2 hours (1.5 hour approach plus 2 hour exit), with difficulty grade B. The critical gotcha here is exposure to constant moisture. The route is almost always very wet, especially the iron ladder sections and anywhere near the Gaisloch cave, making metal handholds slippery and requiring secure footwork and excellent glove grip. In winter, the route becomes frozen and snow-covered, turning a moderate route into something significantly more serious. Full via ferrata set and helmet are mandatory. May through October is best, though rain or recent moisture will make the route considerably more challenging than the grade suggests. Key warning: don't underestimate the water seepage and slippery metal on this one; many climbers struggle more here than on technically harder routes due to the constant dampness.
