Reichenau an der Rax, Austria
The Kronich Eisenweg is a compact but punchy via ferrata on Törlkopf in Austria's Rax-Schneeberg range, located about an hour northeast of Vienna. What makes it special is the intensity packed into just 50 meters of climbing. The route tackles a sheer southern rock face with steep, overhanging sections that feel surprisingly exposed for such a short route. It's ideal if you want real climbing challenge without a full-day commitment, and you'll get solid alpine views from the Rax plateau with mostly solitude compared to busier nearby ferrata routes.
The ferrata itself takes 30 minutes to climb, but plan for a full day: 3 hours 15 minutes to approach via the marked Törlweg from Edlach an der Rax, then 2 hours descent. Grade C by Austrian standards (some rate it C/D), with serious exposure and overhanging pitches that demand confidence and good footwork. You'll need full via ferrata gear including helmet, harness, gloves, and good climbing shoes. The upper sections aren't friendly to anyone with vertigo. Best May through September; avoid after rain since the rock drains slowly. Key gotcha: the exposure feels more serious than the grade suggests, especially in the overhanging upper pitches, so arrive with energy reserves and go early to maximize daylight for descent.
